In April 2008, the principle of the company now incorporated as Bjet Products Inc. was approached by a major distributor to the Do-It-Yourself retail market with a request to develop an environmentally responsible flooring subfloor and underlayment product to fill a void in the world wide flooring subfloor and underlayment market. There existed no environmentally responsible product in the market that was easy to install over any type of flooring substrate (concrete or OSB board), in any environment, and in a wide range of home, commercial and institutional applications, anywhere in the world.
Nothing is more frustrating than dealing with moisture issues in a flooring system weather it comes from a damp concrete basement floor or a concrete or wood substrate floor above ground. The moisture can damage walls and finished flooring and cause real health problems related to growth of mold and mildew that goes undetectable until the issue is serious. A damp basement is more than a nuisance. If your basement includes finished living space, any kind of moisture can ruin carpeting, drywall, and framing. Even if you have a crawl space or just use your basement for storage, a simple case of condensation can buckle hardwood flooring on the level above and spawn harmful mold and mildew.
Bjet’s market research confirmed that a market opportunity existed for a flooring subfloor and underlayment product that was environmentally friendly, water proof, mildew and mold proof, impervious to insects, easy and fast to install, and would facilitate any finished flooring product installed over it as well as had a wide range of applications including residential, commercial, and institutional.
Bjet Products Inc. engineers took their experience and their ready access to a number of contractors who had installed traditional wood based subflooring systems as well as other underlayment products and began developing a product that was not wood based or cement based. The intent at the outset was to create a subflooring product for wet basements that was both environmentally responsible and had a higher perceived value than the current subfloor products on the market.
After testing and development of a series of subflooring and underlayment products the product that ultimately met all the environmental, design and functional criteria proved to be one that had an underlying base made of recycled materials (a mixture of recycled rubber tires and plastic bottles) and a natural inorganic fire resistant material, magnesium oxide as the surface board.
By combining the magnesium oxide surface board with the recycled composite rubber-plastic base Bjet Products Inc. created an innovative, subflooring and underlayment product that met Bjet’s “green” strategy. Bjet trademarked it as Tyroc. And we have gained the attention of consumers, contractor building suppliers, retail flooring outlets, Do-It-Yourself retailers, flooring installers and contractors, architects and developers in both Canada and the US.
